Dallas–Fort Worth (DFW) classifieds: jobs and rooms for rent
DFW is the shorthand for Dallas–Fort Worth in North Texas. Dallas is on the east side, Fort Worth on the west, and Arlington and Grand Prairie sit in between. The Vietnamese community here is spread over several areas rather than one neighborhood. You'll find Vietnamese shops in Garland, northeast of Dallas, in Arlington and Grand Prairie, and in Haltom City on the Fort Worth side.
Reading posts by highway
The cities run into each other, so people often place things by the nearest highway. Knowing a few of them tells you right away whether a post is close.
- Garland and Mesquite are east of Dallas, with I-635 running through.
- Richardson, Plano, Allen and McKinney line US-75 heading north.
- Carrollton, Lewisville and Denton line I-35E, also heading north.
- Arlington and Grand Prairie are between the two big cities. I-30 and I-20 cross them east to west, and TX-360 runs north to south.
- Fort Worth and Haltom City are on the west side, with Euless and Bedford along 183 on the way to DFW Airport.
Getting to work
You almost always need a car here. DART light rail runs through Dallas and some nearby cities, and the Trinity Railway Express (TRE) runs between Dallas and Fort Worth. That works if the job is near a station. If you just arrived and don't have a car yet, find a room close to work first.
- Check the drive on a map at morning and evening rush hour, not at noon. Two cities that look close can take a long time in traffic.
- Many of the fast roads here are toll roads. Using them every day adds up, so count it in.
- If an ad just says "Dallas", ask which city the shop is actually in. Garland and Arlington are both DFW but far apart.
Work
Nail salons hire all over the area, from Garland and Arlington out to the northern suburbs. Restaurants, phở shops and bánh mì shops hire too. DFW also has a lot of warehouses, so check the Factory / Warehouse section.
- For salons in the northern suburbs such as Frisco, McKinney or Southlake, ask how much English the job needs.
- Ask whether pay comes weekly or every two weeks, and whether tips are paid out the same day or added to the paycheck.
- Some winters bring ice that makes the roads too slick to drive. Ask what the shop does on those days.
- Treat any pay figure in an ad as something to confirm on the phone.
Rooms
- Live on the same side of town as your job. Working in Arlington and living in Plano means a long drive every day.
- North Texas gets hail in spring. Ask whether there's covered parking or a garage spot.
- Ask whether the pipes have ever burst in a freeze, and whether that got fixed.
- Ask whose name the electric bill is in and how it gets split each month.
- Ask whether it's month to month or a signed lease, and how much notice you give before moving out.
- Don't pay anything before you've been inside. If someone pushes you to send money online to hold the room, move on.
Posting
Posting here costs nothing and needs no account, only an email to confirm. Put the city and the nearest highway in the ad, like "Garland, near 635" or "Arlington, near 360", so people can tell if it's on their way. Posts stay up 45 days. Shortly before that, an email arrives with a link to renew for free. To hear about new posts in your city, sign up for an email alert.
