Houston Vietnamese classifieds — jobs and rooms for rent

Houston's Vietnamese community is centered in Southwest Houston, along Bellaire Boulevard from around Beltway 8 into Alief. Vietnamese grocery stores, phở and bánh mì shops, insurance and tax offices line that stretch. Sugar Land, Stafford, Missouri City and Richmond are a short drive southwest, and Katy is out west. Houston is spread out and you drive everywhere, so check where a post is before you call.

Finding work

• Nail salons hire the most, from inside the city out to Katy, Cypress, Pearland and Tomball, where clients are mostly English-speaking. Ask how much English the job needs.
• Restaurants come next: phở shops, bánh mì shops and crawfish places. Crawfish season runs from early in the year into early summer, and those places often need extra kitchen and floor help then.
• Ads that say "khu Bellaire", "Bellaire với Beltway 8" or "khu Alief" are close to the Vietnamese shops.
• Salons out in Katy, Cypress or Tomball can mean a long drive in rush-hour traffic. Ask about hours.
• Houston is hard without a car. METRO buses run, but routes are sparse, so ask about a ride with a coworker.
• Guarantees, splits and tips differ shop to shop. Confirm any number in an ad on the phone.

Finding a room

• Rent is lower than in California, so many people get a private room, or a group rents a whole house.
• Rooms near Bellaire go fast, so call early.
• Ask whether utilities are included. The AC runs all summer and the power bill climbs.
• Ask whether the house has flooded in past storms. Some low-lying areas take water in heavy rain.
• Ask about laundry, cooking and parking.
• See the room before any deposit. Skip anyone who asks for money before you've been inside.
